As Sabine rushed across the driveway fleeing from her home, she stopped to see Scratch walking out of his mansion holding a dark haired girl’s hand. She was grabbing onto him and kissing him on the neck. Anger rose up within her like hot fire.

But, when Scratch saw Sabine, he called out, “Hey Sabine—wait.”

Her insides felt like they were being ripped out. More than anything, she wanted to cry. At once, she started to run again, but Scratch let go of Marlene’s hand and jumped over the fence to stop Sabine. When he caught up to her, he grabbed hold of her arm.

“You gotta tell me what’s going on.” His face paled as he stared into her watery eyes.

“I need somewhere to sleep,” she said, trying with all her might to keep back her tears. It would feel worse, if he saw her weaknesses.

“Uh…” he smiled wryly. “You can get in my bed.” Amusement played at his lips.

But Sabine wasn’t in a joking mood by any means. “Okay,” she whispered. Normally, she would have never considered it, but she was unusually tired. And she didn’t want to be alone when she knew Harmonious was pursuing her. “I’ll come over.”

His head jutted back. “Okay then.” His amused grin was still in place as he took her hand and led her out of her driveway around through the gates to his castle.

“What’s this?” Marlene asked with her hands on her hips as she stood in the driveway next to her red Corvette.

“Helping a friend.” His cold, smooth voice caused the fine hairs on Sabine’s arms to stand on end.

Now that Sabine saw Marlene close up, she understood Scratch’s interest in her. Her face was as smooth and delicate looking as a piece of china. It was oval shaped with long eyelashes and fine features just like a doll.

But as she faced Marlene, she thought about how much she wasn’t in the mood for a girl fight. She was way too tired and she sensed that this dark haired beauty might not be as delicate as she looked. Her body exuded the perfumed scents of exotic ocean flowers she had only smelled in the darkest depths of the sea. Creatures from those places were not always what they seemed. “I’ll go,” Sabine said, starting to turn.

“To hell you will.” A scowl crinkled his forehead. “I’ll talk to you later,” he said to Marlene.

The corners of her lips turned downward as she shook her pretty head and got into the car starting the engine without hesitation. At once, she peeled out of the driveway and sped away like a demon confirming Sabine’s suspicions of unpredictability.

When Sabine looked up at the castle as they approached, her eyes widened. Scratch opened a huge door of dark hand carved wood. Lovely imprinted vines weaved their way up giving way to elegant roses with a sun setting in the middle over some mountains. Once they stepped inside, Sabine was surprised by the still silence. The gang had left.

“Wow.
